We’re in the midst of a mindfulness revolution.
Drop the word mindfulness into a Google search and you’ll pull up about 39,600,000 results in just 0.56 seconds. Everyone from celebrities to zookeepers are doing it; mindful burger joints are popping up; adults are colouring alongside their kids. And, of course, there’s an app - well, hundreds of apps - promising heightened self awareness in just 10 minutes a day.
With proponents who claim that practicing mindfulness can decrease pain, improve sleep and control the emotions, it’s no surprise everyone wants to join the club.
In a recent Washington Post article, writer Karen Heller poses the question, “We’re all so ‘mindful’ these days - but what the heck does that mean?” Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine Emeritus and creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, explains, “Stress in the last 35 years has gone through the roof,” pointing to mindfulness as a method of maintaining sanity in the midst of excessive multitasking.
Without getting lost in defining the practice, we invite you to take a moment to discover what mindfulness - or being aware of the present moment - means for you. Do it in a place that you can exist undisturbed. For many people, that’s the shower. Using moment-to-moment awareness, follow these steps to experience the cleansing ritual we swear by.
Become aware of your intention to wash your hair. In the chillier, drier months, we recommend TO112’s Cleanse Shampoo for Dry Hair.
Turn on the water and notice how the knob feels in your hand. Is it cool to the touch?
Become aware of water as it falls from the shower head to the floor.
Watch as the steam fills the shower stall. Can you feel the sensation of the heat as it reaches your body? In this moment, you can acknowledge that you are simply waiting.
Step into the shower and notice the feeling of the water as it covers your entire body.
Open the shampoo, pour a small amount into your hand and massage it into your scalp using both hands. If you’re using TO112’s TO112’s Shampoo For Dry Hair, be aware of the invigorating scents of citrus and ginger.
Repeat step 6 for the conditioning step. TO112’s Conditioner for Dry Hair is an indulgent, natural beauty product that improves overall hair health.
When you have finished washing, observe your intention to end the shower.
Turn the water off and wrap yourself in a dry towel. Observe how each part of your body responds to being patted dry.
Once towel-dried or completely dry, treat your hair with a leave-in conditioning mask like TO112’s Console Hair Cream. Warm 2-3 drops of product between your palms and massage it into your hair from mid-length to ends.
While it may sound hokey, mindfulness can play a tremendous role in promoting relaxation and a reduction in stress - no matter when or where it’s practiced. We practice it as part of our holistic beauty routine, as a reminder to be kind, patient and generous with ourselves. If you notice your mind wandering, simply bring it back to the original intention of the cleansing ritual. Rinse and repeat.
